SMITH COUNTY – Smith County Precinct One declines ICE partnershipOur news partners at KETK report that as several law enforcement agencies across Smith County have joined or are considering joining the 287(g) Task Force Model Program, Precinct 1 said it will not seek to participate in the program. Constable Ralph Caraway stated his office will continue to enforce the law and remain committed to serving and protecting the community while upholding the rights of all residents.

“We will continue to enforce the law, investigate crimes, serve civil process, and conduct traffic enforcement consistent with our legal authority and duties,” Caraway said. “Those responsibilities will not be expanded or exercised for the purpose of targeting any person because of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, color, or creed.”

Constable Caraway stated he wants to remain transparent about his decision not to join the task force and encourages any residents with questions or concerns to visit his office.

“We welcome community engagement and transparency. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the Precinct 1 Constable’s Office,” Caraway said. “We will continue to work with citizens, community leaders, and local organizations to ensure public safety while protecting the rights and dignity of everyone in Smith County.”

On Tuesday morning, during the Smith County Commissioners Court meeting, a motion was passed permitting the Precinct 4 Constable’s Office to join the program. The motion was supported by Constable Josh Joplin, who justified the decision, claiming it helps reduce crime across the county and enables them to protect residents better.

“Everyone wants to live the American dream, but when that ‘dream’ is funded through crime and victimization, that person becomes a threat and a cancer to our precinct, our state and our nation,” Joplin said.
