Law enforcement/stores prepare for new THC rulesTYLER – Governor Greg Abbott’s recently signed executive order GA 56 does not change their zero-tolerance policy regarding illegal substances. According to our news partner KETK, the new order makes it a crime in Texas to market or sell hemp-derived products to minors, restricts the placement of stores and gives police the ability to cancel a store’s license to sell if the rules are not followed.

“I don’t think it’s going to have a huge impact on law enforcement, especially local and county law enforcement, but, you know, it kind of remains to be seen.” Smith County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Larry Christian said.

Currently, the new executive order will have law enforcement follow similar procedures and guidelines for other banned products.

“If we’re looking at enforcement on this, we’re talking about nothing any different than how we would enforce the sale of tobacco or alcohol to a minor to someone under the age of 21,” Christian said.

American Shaman owner Morris Anderson said he believes the order from the governor will be a positive development for the industry and shops like his that sell these products, and hopes it will lead to proper regulation to promote safe use.

“I think it’s good, I think we need to regulate it, I think we definitely need the card,” Anderson said. “Everybody is not playing by the rules. So we’ve got to try to make sure we abide by the laws of the land.”

The state’s health department and alcoholic beverage commission will be responsible for establishing the new rules.

“TABC is working closely with the office of the governor, our colleagues at the Department of State Health Services, and the Department of Public Safety to implement the requirements of Executive Order ga 56,” Director of Communications Chris Porter said. “In the coming weeks, we will provide additional guidance to stakeholders.
