JACKSONVILLE – A regional SWAT team has arrested a 23-year-old with a history of violent crimes in connection with a burglary involving a stolen AK-47 firearm in Jacksonville on Tuesday, according to a report from our news partner KETK. The Jacksonville Police Department said officers were dispatched to a reported burglary at around 7:47 a.m. involving an AK-47 firearm that was stolen. The suspect, who was captured on surveillance footage, has been identified as 23-year-old Jayden Duane Hopson.
Due to his criminal history, including charges of murder and aggravated robbery, the Cherokee County Regional Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team was activated.
After officials obtained an arrest warrant for burglary of a habitation, the SWAT team, alongside the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, arrived at Hopson’s residence at around 1:36 p.m. and arrested him without incident. Four others were detained for questioning.
During the search, officers located and took into custody the stolen firearm. The investigation remains ongoing and additional charges may be pending.
“The Jacksonville Police Department extends its appreciation to all agencies involved for their professionalism and teamwork in bringing this operation to a safe and successful conclusion,” the police department said.
