MARSHALL — The historical childhood home of Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Y.A. Tittle burned to the ground early Thursday. The two-story home at 1200 Harper St. in Marshall was completely engulfed by 1:30 when the fire department arrived, authorities said. The cause of the fire was unknown, but authorities said it may have been caused by a halogen lamp that was knocked over at the back of the house.

β€œIt is completely destroyed,” said Marshall Fire Department Assistant Chief Reggie Cooper. Cooper said 14 firefighters worked until 5 a.m. battling the blaze. The Longview News-Journal reports, no one was inside at the time of the fire, which was being renovated. Cooper said the owner lives out of town.

Former football quarterback in the National Football League, Yelberton Abraham Tittle was born in 1926 in Marshall. As a Giant, Tittle set an NFL record by throwing 36 touchdown passes during the 1963 season, and in 1971, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
