MARSHALL — According to a press release from the Marshall Police department, a man was arrested for stealing equipment while firefighters were actively battling a fire.
On July 11, at the Bel Aire Apartments on Paula street, while Marshall firefighters were working to bring a fire under control, Marshall Police officers were alerted that a bag of equipment was missing. The investigation led to a suspect in a nearby apartment, identified as Marcus Donte Moore, 28, of Marshall, and the Fire Department equipment was located.
While being handcuffed, Moore broke away from officers and was apprehended after a brief chase. One Marshall Police officer sustained a hand injury during the pursuit.
Moore was arrested and booked into the Harrison County Jail on the charges of Theft of Property, Failure to Identify Fugitive with Intent to Give False Information, Interference with Public Duties, and Escape Causing Bodily Injury. Moore also had additional outstanding warrants in Harrison County, including: Theft of Firearm, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Criminal Mischief
“We appreciate our officers’ quick response in this case,” said Marshall Police Chief Cliff Carruth. “We won’t tolerate individuals interfering with emergency operations or putting public safety personnel at risk. This kind of behavior is unacceptable.”
“I want to thank the community for their support during this incident,” said Fire Chief David Rainwater. “The quick recovery of our equipment was made possible by observant citizens who helped alert authorities. Our firefighters depend on every piece of equipment to protect lives and property, and the community’s assistance in ensuring we have the tools we need to do our job safely is invaluable. This incident reminds us that public safety is truly a team effort between our department and the residents we serve.”
