TYLER — A Tyler man has recently been reindicted by the state on 10 counts of possession of child pornography, for which he was first served with in 2021. According to our news partner KETK, In a Smith County arrest affidavit from 2021, a Texas Department of Public Safety special agent developed probable cause that an IP address in Smith County possessed and distributed child pornography.
The investigation found that several electronic devices that were connected to the IP address had a peer-to-peer file sharing software. The IP address was registered to a residence where Eddie Willis lived and a search warrant was obtained from the county judge. Read the rest of this entry »
TYLER – Currently South Bois D’Arc Avenue is closed from the Tyler Public Library parking lot entrance to West Woldert Street for street improvements. The intersection of West Woldert Street and South Bois D’Arc Avenue will remain open through the end of the school day on Friday, May 22.
The intersection at South College Avenue and West Elm Street has reopened following previous improvements. The Tyler Public Library parking lot will remain accessible from the South College Avenue entrance, and full vehicle and pedestrian access has been restored to the Fair Plaza Parking Garage.
South Bonner Avenue has also reopened following its one-week closure that began May 11.
TYLER — The Tyler Fire Department is in mourning this week after one of their own died from cancer. According to the Tyler Professional Fire Fighters Association, Local 883 driver engineer Scott Starkey has died after fighting cancer. Starkey was honored by the City of Tyler last year for having served as a firefighter for over 25 years.
“Scott was one of a kind. Crafty, hardheaded, and the kind of firefighter who always found a way to get the job done. He was the brother who could make you laugh, frustrate you, and teach you something all in the same conversation. His grit, determination, and stubborn refusal to back down were part of what made him who he was, both on and off the fireground. More than anything, Scott loved this job and the people beside him. The firefighter’s association asked for the community to keep Starkey’s friends and family in their thoughts while they grieve.
PAYNE SPRINGS – The body of a kayaker was pulled from Cedar Creek Lake in Henderson County on Sunday after they went missing on Saturday. According to our news partner KETK, Payne Springs Fire Rescue were called out to Cedar Creek Lake to help search for a 22-year-old whose kayak had capsized.
The search continued until around 10 p.m. The kayaker’s body was discovered at around 10:20 a.m. Sunday morning.
Payne Springs Fire Rescue said this was the second drowning they’ve responded to on the lake this year and they urged everyone who uses the lake to wear a fitting life jacket or flotation device.
“This marks the second drowning incident on the lake that PSFR has responded to already this year,” Payne Springs Fire Rescue said. “We strongly encourage everyone enjoying the lake to wear a properly fitted life jacket or flotation device at all times while on the water. A simple precaution can save a life.”
TYLER — The Caldwell Zoo was evacuated Sunday after officials said the zoo received what appears to be a copycat bomb threat that was connected to a larger scheme nationally.
The anonymous threat said claimed that explosive devices were planted on zoo grounds. Zoo officials immediately evacuated the park out of caution. Tyler Police and Fire Department helped with a full sweep of the park.
In a statement from zoo officials, “No threats were found and the police department have given the ‘all clear.” They added, “is a shame that individuals would target an organization that does so much for the community, education and wildlife conservation.”
The zoo remained closed for the rest of of the day,
TYLER – U.S. Republican Congressman Nathaniel Moran stopped in Tyler on Saturday to congratulate five East Texas students who’ve been accepted into military academies across the United States.
“This is especially meaningful to me as the United States Congressman to have the opportunity to make sure that we are picking leaders of character for tomorrow, that we’re sending East Texans throughout the nation to be the leaders in the military and the nation for generations to come because I think East Texas makes the best leaders, and I think that our students need to have influence in all of these academies.” Moran said
Thanks in part to Moran’s nomination, Brooks Frans and James Thompson will join the United States Naval Academy, while Brock Sieber and Jayden Riley will serve in the United States Air Force Academy and Nora Ni will join the United States Military Academy at West Point.
The process to be admitted into a United States military academy often requires the applicant to get a nomination from a United States Congressman, like Moran, or a Senator, the Vice President or even the President, unless they’re applying to join the Coast Guard’s academy.
WILLS POINT – The Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man for aggravated assault near Wills Point on Friday after an hours-long standoff.
According to our news partner KETK and the sheriff’s office, deputies were sent out to County Road 3832,on the western edge of Wills Point, after reports of a reported verbal disturbance. When they arrived, he reportedly already left. The man was identified as 32-year-old John Cooper of Wills Point. Deputies learned that Cooper had active arrest warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
At around 4:43 p.m. on Friday, the sheriff’s office said deputies found Cooper at a travel trailer north of Wills Point. Deputies attempted to contact Cooper for over two hours, but he wouldn’t come out. Read the rest of this entry »

ARP – The Arp Police Department has released body camera footage from an officer who shot a resident’s dog on Friday while he was responding to a fire. According to our news partner KETK, and Arp PD, the officer was getting off of another service call at around 7:40 p.m. on Friday when he saw black smoke rising from a property a few streets away. When he got to the scene, he saw a 20-foot tall fire emerging from behind a residence and so headed towards the fire to see if the residence was in danger.
Arp Police Chief Joe Keegan said in a statement on Saturday that the officer was walking towards the property’s fence when two dogs approached from the other side of the fence and crawled under it. The officer feared for his safety as the dogs reportedly attempted to attack him so he fired two shots from his department issued pistol, hitting one of the two dogs. Read the rest of this entry »
LONGVIEW — On Thursday, the Longview City Council approved the construction of a new entrance to Teague Park, which residents say has been declining over the years. According to our news partner KETK, Teague Park has been a part of the Longview community for decades and is seeing a decline that cannot be ignored.
“Kind of been known as a nightly activity type of place,” Longview resident John Dove said.
To combat the issue, the city council has approved the next big step toward the park’s revitalization with the ‘Bring Back Teague Park’ project. The city is partnering with the Longview Economic Development Corporation, which is committing a million dollars to the project, including the addition of a new entrance.
“Well, it means quite a bit. Teague Park is one of those assets that needs to be brought to life.” Longview Economic Development Corporation President & CEO Wayne Mansfield said.
The goal is to once again put a spotlight on a public space where everyone can come together.
“The entrance into Teague Park would bring a lot more visibility to the park and make it more utilized by the community,” Mansfield said.
CHEROKEE COUNTY — Two people are dead following a two-vehicle crash on Highway 110 in Cherokee County on Friday afternoon. According to our news partner KETK, the cause of the crash and the identity of the victim have not been released. The accident is still under investigations.
NUEVO PROGRESO, MEXICO – The U.S. Marshals captured one of the top 10 most wanted Texas sex offenders in Nuevo Progreso, Mexico. According to our news partner KETK, Kit Edward Lulow, 42, was convicted of rape, sexual abuse and sodomy of a 13-year-old girl in Oregon in 2008. Lulow was sentenced to 75 months in prison for those charges but was arrested multiple times between 2014 and 2019 for violating his parole.
In February, he was arrested in Marion County, Texas, for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of child pornography. He later bonded out of Marion County Jail and fled to Mexico, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)
Lulow was also wanted in Cass County since February for failing to comply with sex offender registration requirements. Then in April, the U.S. District Court of the Eastern District of Texas issued two warrants for Lulow’s arrest on a charge of possession of child pornography. Read the rest of this entry »
ANDERSON COUNTY – The infamous black bear that has been making its way across East Texas for the past several months was spotted in Anderson County earlier this week.
The bear was spotted on Thursday evening on private property near Highway 294 and the Neches River. It was reported back in April that the bear had spent the winter in the Anderson County area and is believed to be the first documented black bear to do so in East Texas in over 50 years.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has stated that the bear is a young male growing rapidly and could be fully mature by the middle of this summer. The department thinks he may be heading into bear country in Louisiana, Arkansas, or Oklahoma based on his travels through East Texas. Read the rest of this entry »
TYLER – The Street and Stormwater Department is preparing to begin improvements on Old Bascom Road. The road will be closed Friday, May 22, and is anticipated to reopen Thursday, June 25.
Message boards will be placed at the intersections of Old Omen Road and Old Bascom Road, as well as Kent Drive and Old Bascom Road, to alert drivers to the upcoming closure.
The project includes replacing two collapsing tin culverts under the road with new prefabricated concrete box culverts. Crews will also make road repairs in the area. The entire road will be closed during construction. Read the rest of this entry »
RUSK – More than 100 code enforcement violations issued by the city of Rusk recently have caused quite a stir in the community. The people on the receiving end of those violations brought their frustrations to the city council meeting Thursday night. According to our news partner KETK, people packed the room at Thursday’s Rusk City Council meeting, demanding answers about the dozens of code enforcement violations issued last week. Residents said the code violations ranged from roofing issues to weeds on the fences to even toys left in the yard.
Residents expressed their frustration with code enforcement and were disappointed that they weren’t reviewed further before being posted. The mayor of Rusk addressed people’s concerns and said everyone can throw out the recent letters they received.
While there was a collective sigh of relief, Rusk residents felt the city needed to fix the problem inside the house and bring change.
SMITH COUNTY — Friday is the final deadline for Texas property owners to protest their tax bill and the Smith County Appraisal District is seeing hundreds of people try to file a dispute last-minute. Experts like S.T.A.R. Tax Protest CTO Deric McCurry have said property owners who file a protest may be able to lower their assessed value and save money on taxes, potentially making their home more attractive to buyers. McCurry recommends requesting an appraisal review board hearing for a better chance at a settlement.
“If you’re looking for maximum saving before going in front of an appraisal review board, provide evidence of things like condition documentation on your home and comparable sales that have happened,” McCurry said.
Appraisal districts like the one in Smith County do offer review hearings, but with time running out Chief Appraiser Carol McNeil said property owners are better off filing online immediately then scheduling a follow-up appointment. Read the rest of this entry »

TYLER – In order to prolong the life of local roads before expensive repairs are required, the City of Tyler is moving forward with a significant street maintenance initiative. The Tyler City Council approved a $946,751 contract with Reynolds and Kay for the 2026 Seal Coat Project Wednesday. HARRISON COUNTY – After leading deputies on a police pursuit, a Tennessee man who was awaiting a court appearance on a child-rape charge committed suicide in Harrison County on Tuesday night.
The sheriff’s office, as well as our news partner KETK, reports that around 11:30 p.m., a deputy pulled over 36-year-old Trinidad Torres on Highway 59 South. Torres was reportedly acting tense during the stop, and the deputy asked him to get out of his car after discovering a pistol in his possession. Torres reportedly refused to get out of his car and started to drive away from the scene. Before Torres crashed his car into a cable close to the 1300 block of Highway 59, a chase started. SMITH COUNTY — The Smith County Commissioners Court striked down a motion to conduct an audit on previous road bonds in a meeting on Tuesday. According to our news partner KETK, the independent audit would examine how the county has spent millions of dollars from taxpayer-funded road bonds from 2017 to 2021. The motion came to the court after a watchdog group raised concerns about a possible $7 million discrepancy, rising project costs and delays.
Ultimately, the court rejected the motion by a majority vote. Precinct 1 Commissioner Christina Drewry was the sole vote in favor of the audit.
“This is about not repeating the same mistakes,” Drewry said. “We didn’t do a great job of capturing all of the documents, the inspections, the engineering. There are documents that are missing. We shouldn’t have that. The road bond was $84 million.”
VAN ZANDT COUNTY — The Texas Department of Public Safety is seeking any information known of a hit-and-run that left a pedestrian dead on May 8 in Van Zandt County. According to our news partner KETK and DPS, the incident occurred on County Road 2501, rural Van Zandt County at around 11:30 p.m. The pedestrian was walking south and was struck by an unknown vehicle traveling in an unknown direction of travel.
The DPS asks that anyone with any information regarding the fatal crash is urged to contact them at 940-327-9122.
LONGVIEW — A Monday night dispute in Longview ended in violence when a man was stabbed and hospitalized, authorities said. According to our news partner KETK, the Longview Police Department said officers were dispatched to a “reported cutting” in the area of Hawthorne Avenue and East Culver Street on Monday at around 5:52 p.m. When they arrived, they learned two men had been involved in a verbal altercation.
During the altercation, the victim was reportedly stabbed and was taken to a local hospital for life-threatening injuries.
53-year-old Catalino Garcia Ramirez was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He remains in the Gregg County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
TYLER – On Wednesday, May 13, City of Tyler City Council members were sworn into office. Those taking their oath of office included newly elected Councilmembers Clint Childs (District 4) and Carleen Dark-Bays (District 6).
Re-elected Council member Petra Hawkins (District 2) will be re-sworn in at a later date.
Following the swearing-in, the council held its first meeting, where they elected District 2 Council member Petra Hawkins as Mayor Pro Tem. Members of the Council elect the Mayor Pro Tem, who serves in the Mayor’s absence for a one-year term.
SMITH COUNTY — As East Texas counties continue searching for solutions to protect their property and water rights, Van Zandt County is proposing a partnership with Smith County to better protect the region’s natural resources. According to our news partner KETK, Van Zandt County proposed a 391 commission, which would create a council including commissioners and residents from both counties. It would allow neighboring counties to work together to protect the region’s groundwater and property rights. The commission would oversee potential projects in the area and discuss developmental issues that affect both counties.
Following Tuesday’ s meeting, attended by several key lawmakers and public officials, Smith County Commissioners voted to table the decision until they obtained further information on the proposal. During a Smith County Commissioners Court meeting earlier this month, Van Zandt County resident David Dunigan said if Smith County entered the partnership, it would ensure better protection of the region’s natural resources.
“Your voice is going to tell people we can’t be predatory against East Texas counties anymore,” Dunigan said. “I really urge you guys to amplify your voice for the citizens of this county, and for the surrounding East Texas counties to be able to at least say yes, we want something, or no, we don’t.” Read the rest of this entry »
SMITH COUNTY — A person has been arrested after a traffic stop in Smith County led officers to the discovery of a suitcase containing over 27 pounds of marijuana on Monday afternoon.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained from the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, deputies initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle on I-20 for traveling in the left-hand lane while not passing. The driver was identified as Reinaldo Hernandez.
Deputies detected the odor of marijuana while speaking to Hernandez. After getting consent to search and being denied, a detective and his K-9 partner conducted a free-air sniff, which resulted in a positive result. They then located a suitcase in the bed of the vehicle. The suitcase contained 25 vacuum-sealed bags containing marijuana. The bags totaled a weight of 27.5 pounds.
Hernandez was arrested for possessing marijuana in an amount equal to or less than 50 pounds but greater than 5 pounds. He was booked into the Smith County Jail on Monday and was later released after posting bond.
HENDERSON COUNTY – An East Texas county has passed a resolution asking the governor and a state representative to stop local officials from becoming “powerless observers” in the face of the fast growth of A.I. data centers. The resolution, which expressed concerns about the potential effects of large-scale data center projects on local infrastructure and natural resources, was read by the county’s attorney during a Henderson County Commissioners Court meeting on Tuesday morning.
Our news partners at KETK report that additionally, the resolution calls for an independent evaluation of the effects on natural resources before any new A.I. data centers are built. In order to address what the county refers to as “urgent reliability, water supply, and local governance concerns,” it also requests that state lawmakers investigate the matter and, if required, call a special session.
The decision was made almost a month after Data Factory showed interest in constructing a 10-megawatt facility in Athens. The company refers to its facilities as “flexible power farms,” a form of infrastructure that it claims can support high-performance computing while stabilizing strained power grids.
TYLER – Traffic signal work at the intersection of Troup Hwy and Loop 323 has now been completed. KTBB talked to Tyler PD Public Information Officer Andy Erbaugh Tuesday afternoon and he made the confirmation.
