TYLER — Thirty Tyler school teachers were honored Tuesday night as campus teachers of the year. They were recognized at the districtâs annual Teacher of the Year banquet at the Harvey Convention Center. From that group two were singled out as Tylerâs âTeachers of the Year.â Jones Elementary MST Academy fifth grade teacher Michelle Beas was named the 2011 Elementary Teacher of the Year. Hubbard Middle School MYP humanities teacher Cindy Nick was named the 2011 Secondary Teacher of the Year.
Beas believes teaching is a way of life. âIt is my calling and passionâ, said Beas. âIt is a profession with so much responsibility, challenge, and joy. It has, and continues to be, so rewarding to watch students surpass my wildest expectations. Teaching for me is the ultimate celebration of life.â
Nick says her devotion to teaching began at a very young age and continues to be her passion and purpose today. âI am convinced that education is the key to understanding while understanding is instrumental in creating a world where people of all cultures can co-exist peacefully on this ever-shrinking planet,â said Nick when describing her philosophy of teaching. âIn my opinion, teaching is an art that comes from the heart; itâs about inspiration, not simply motivation,â
Criteria for selection of both the campus Teachers of the Year and the District Teachers of the Year included, among other items: playing an active and useful role in their community, commitment to the teaching profession through continuous improvement, and lessons that creatively engage and inspire students to achieve high academic standards. Tylerâs top two teachers will now compete at the regional level this summer.

The Talkback question that aired on KTBB Radio and was simulcast on KETK NBC 56 television in Tyler on Wednesday, October 27 was unfortunate in its wording and unfortunate in the perception that it created among a large number of thoughtful individuals. The question, âWill the acceptance of homosexuality lead to the fall of America?â is poorly worded at best and inappropriate altogether at worst. For that, we apologize.
There are many issues surrounding homosexuality that are fair game for discussion in the media and in opinion journalism. The proper role, if any, for openly gay individuals in the military, the legitimacy of same-sex marriages and the public behavior by some individuals at gay and lesbian events held outdoors in public view are among topics about which reasonable people may disagree. These and other topics surrounding homosexuality are topics that talk radio hosts and opinion journalists may legitimately pose to their respective audiences.
With that said, the way our Talkback question was posed might be seen as asking, âDo homosexuals, by their very existence, threaten to bring down America?â We believe that such a question, posed in such a manner, is likely to generate more heat than light.
I understand how those who either heard, or heard about, KTBBâs Talkback question on Wednesday might have been offended. For the offense that was taken, we sincerely apologize.
