TYLER – Smith County Officials awarded veteran volunteers with Team Rubicon with the Smith County Community Hero Award Thursday after the group worked for nearly a week helping a dozen residents cleanup storm damage. County Judge Neal Franklin and Emergency Management Coordinator Brandon Moore presented the group with the award Thursday morning before they left to return to their various homes around Texas and other states.
About 15 volunteers from Team Rubicon worked Saturday, June 8, through Wednesday, June 12. The team helped 12 residents clean up large tree debris in the Tyler, Flint and Chapel Hill communities.Team Rubicon is a nonprofit, veteran-led disaster response and humanitarian organization.
Team Rubicon’s services were free to the homeowners. They are funded by donations and grant funding. For more information about Team Rubicon, visit their website.
ATHENS – FEMA opened a Disaster Recovery Center in Henderson County June 11 to provide help to East Texans affected by severe storms that happened April 26 through June 5. The center is located in Athens at the Henderson County Senior Center on Highway 31 East. The center will operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Please note, you don’t have to visit the Disaster Recovery Center to apply for FEMA assistance. You can either call the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362 between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m, or go to the FEMA website. The deadline to apply for FEMA benefits is July 16.
MARSHALL – The Harrison County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting in which one person died and two others were injured. According to our news partner KETK, deputies found 25-year-old Derrick Jamison shot to death late Sunday morning on Mitchell Road in rural Marshall. Two others, Bryan Jamison and Audrey Jamison were taken to local hospitals for treatment for their injuries. Authorities are continuing to investigate.
SMITH COUNTY – The Smith County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a man who reportedly carjacked a vehicle on Monday. According to our news partner KETK, officers say the driver of a 2003 Ford Expedition saw a person walking on SH 110 early Monday morning and offered to give them a ride. The person, once inside the vehicle, pulled a knife on the driver and ordered them out of the car. That person is described as a white male in his late 20s or early 30s with dark sandy blonde hair. Sheriff’s deputies say the vehicle was last seen on I-20 East in Terrell, but Terrell PD couldn’t find the vehicle or the person suspected of stealing it. TYLER – The City of Tyler Friday, released a summary of clean-up and recovery operations ongoing due to the severe weather that pummeled East Texas earlier this week. Officials are asking residents to report personal property damages to the Texas Division of Emergency Management through the iSTAT Damage Surveys. iSTAT reports could release funding from FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management System directly to those affected. TYLER- The Emergency Operation Center is fully activated, and nine City crews and nine Forestry Service crews are working to assess damage, clear roadways, and repair traffic signals affected by the recent severe thunderstorms that moved through the area. The city expects two more crews from the Forestry Service on Thursday. Residents should be cautious and aware of downed trees and power lines.

SMITH COUNTY- The Smith County Emergency Operations Center has opened two Point of Distribution Centers Wednesday. Smith County residents who are suffering from power outages and property damage can go to Chapel Hill High School and the second distribution center is in Lindale, at the First Baptist Church. Both centers are open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Currently, they are distributing water, ice and tarps at both locations. The Texas A&M Forest Service and the Texas Military Department are running the sites.
The Forest Service also sent saw crews from its Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System to help the City of Tyler and Smith County clear trees from roadways.
The saw crews arrived early Tuesday morning and have been helping the Smith County Road and Bridge Department crews, and Smith County Emergency Services Districts 1 and 2 in clearing roads for emergency vehicles and residents. Both Smith County and the City of Tyler requested, and received, saw crews. These crews were instrumental Tuesday in expediting emergency response and are continuing to work in Smith County on Wednesday, he said.
Monday night’s storms caused damages throughout Smith County, causing more than 300 trees to fall on at least 100 county roads. That does not include roads belonging to cities in Smith County, or highways or farm-to-market roads owned by the Texas Department of Transportation.
On Wednesday, June 5, Smith County Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace and Constables Offices in Lindale reopened to the public after their power was restored. Precinct 4 JP/Constables Office in Winona remains closed because of no power but the constable and deputy constables are still out working. Precinct 3 JP/ Constables Office in Troup do not have internet or phone service. They are in the office but cannot take payments at this time.

TYLER – Volunteers with the Southern Baptists of Texas Convention Disaster Relief have set up a mobile kitchen in response to Monday’s severe storm activity in East Texas.
“With so many residents still without power we want to help by providing meals for the community and first responders,†said SBTC DR Director Scottie Stice. “We also have assessors in the community to see how else we can help.”
The mobile kitchen has set up at Sylvania Church, 2801 S SE Loop 323 in Tyler.

SMITH COUNTY – UPDATE: Officials with Southern Utilities Company said on Thursday that there is no estimated time for the water boil notice to be lifted due to power outages. Officials said ONCOR has not given them a timeframe for power restoration to the company’s facilities. A boil water notice has been issued for Southern Utilities customers in Smith and Cherokee counties due to the recent storms and power outages.
