Donald Trump has so far been unstoppable. Evidence of his unstoppability began shortly after his formal announcement for office. Appearing at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa in July Trump went after Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) saying, “He’s not a war hero. He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

The lead sentence in Politico the next day read, “Trump might finally have crossed the line.”

Cross it or not, Trump’s numbers only got better. Trump has since proved that it’s near impossible for him to say anything that will hurt him in the polls. Every statement, however bombastic, only seems to boost his standing. Every prediction of his demise has been wrong. At a campaign rally in late January Trump said, “I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’tlose voters.”

Trump hasn’t put that claim to the test. So far as we know, no one has been shot. But an exchange with rival Jeb Bush in the GOP debate in South Carolina Saturday may be the next best thing.

In a heated back and forth with Jeb, Trump got his total Code Pink/Nancy Pelosi on. He loudly and viciously attacked Jeb’s brother, former president George W. Bush. Said Trump, “It would have been a wonderful thing [for Nancy Pelosi] to impeach Bush and get him out of office” because “he got us into the war with lies.”

Only the willfully uninformed denizens of the far left believe this to be true. The bipartisan WMD Commission, chaired by former Sen. Chuck Robb (D-VA), completely refutes Trump’s allegation.

Saying that the war in Iraq was ill-advised is well within bounds for Democrats or Republicans. Saying that George W. Bush lied to the American people in order to justify going to war for personal or political reasons is completely out of bounds – for any candidate according to most GOP voters but especially for a Republican candidate.

Trump went on to say that Pres. Bush had “advanced notice” of the 9/11 attacks.

If there is a crossable line for Donald Trump this could be it. If attacking George W. Bush isn’t a bridge too far then nothing is too far. According to polls, former president Bush has an 84 percent approval rating among South Carolina voters. South Carolina is a very heavy military state and the majority of members of the military never wavered in their support for President Bush, even in those dark last days of his administration.

If going off on George W. Bush in a way that sounds more like Michael Moore than a Republican candidate for president doesn’t bring Trump down, his boast about shooting people in the middle of 5th Avenue becomes infinitely more plausible.

If South Carolina Republican voters continue to stand behind Trump following such a vehment attack on George W. Bush, there will likely be nothing that can stop Donald Trump from becoming the nominee.
