Posted/updated on: February 2, 2013 at 5:46 amEAST TEXAS (Staff/AP) — Friday marked the 10th anniversary of the Shuttle Columbia disaster. It was on Feb. 1, 2003, that the Columbia blew up over East Texas skies, minutes away from touchdown in Florida. Many East Texans have personal memories of the explosion and aftermath of the grisly event. NASA honored the seven astronauts who perished at a public memorial service Friday morning at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The crew was returning home from a 16-day science mission when the shuttle disintegrated over East Texas. An investigation board later determined the cause was damage to the wing that occurred during liftoff.
